Zoom has its own in-built connectors for Slack, Cisco, and even Microsoft Teams. You can find the current Zoom integration for Microsoft Teams in the app store. This solution allows users to start or join scheduled meetings through bot commands or a tab. Tabs are productivity tools in the Microsoft Teams UI. Many users find that using an external keyboard with keyboard shortcuts for Microsoft Teams on Windows helps them work more efficiently. For users with mobility or vision disabilities, keyboard shortcuts can be easier than using the touchscreen and are an essential alternative to using a mouse.
Microsoft Teams Rooms devices support a one-touch experience for joining third-party online meetings, also referred to as Direct guest join. When enabled, you can use a Teams Rooms device to join meetings hosted on Cisco WebEx and Zoom just as easily as you can join meetings hosted in Microsoft Teams.
Before you can join third-party meetings from a Teams Rooms device, you need to do the following:
- Configure the Teams Rooms device's Exchange Online room mailbox to process invites for third-party meetings.
- Make sure your organization doesn't have any policies that would prevent you from connecting to third-party meeting services.
- Configure your Teams Rooms devices to allow third-party meetings.
The following sections show you how to do each of these steps.
Step 1: Allow calendar invite processing for third-party meetings
The first thing you need to do to enable a one-touch join experience from a Team Rooms device is set the calendar processing rules for the device's Exchange Online room mailbox. The room mailbox needs to allow external meetings and keep the message body and subject so it can see the URL needed to join the third-party meeting. To set these room mailbox options using the Set-CalendarProcessing cmdlet, do the following:
Connect to Exchange Online PowerShell. For more information, see Connect to Exchange Online PowerShell with Basic authentication or Connect to Exchange Online PowerShell using multi-factor authentication, depending on your authentication method.
Get the User Principal Name (UPN) of the room mailbox if you don't know it by running the following command:
Find the name of the room mailbox associated with your Teams Rooms device and make note of its UPN.
After you find the room mailbox's UPN, run the following command. Replace
<UserPrincipalName>with the room mailbox's UPN:

Step 2: Configure Office 365 Threat Protection and link rewrite
To enable the one-touch join experience, meeting join link information from the third-party meeting needs to be present and readable in the meeting invite. If your organization uses the Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection Safe Links feature, or if you use a third-party solution that scans all incoming and outgoing URLs for threats, it may change the meeting join URLs and make the meeting unrecognizable by the Teams Rooms device. To make sure this doesn't happen, you need to add the third-party meeting service's URLs to the ATP Safe Links 'do not rewrite' list or the third-party URL rewrite exception list.
To add third-party meeting service URLs to the ATP Safe Links 'do not rewrite' list, follow the steps in Set up a custom do-not-rewrite URLs list using ATP Safe Links. If you use a third-party solution, refer to the instructions for that solution to add URLs to its URL rewrite exception list.
Here are some example entries that you may need to add to your ATP Safe Links 'do not rewrite' list or third-party URL rewrite exception list:

Step 3: Enable third-party meetings on device
The last step you need to do is allow each Teams Rooms device to join third-party meetings. Third-party meetings require a username and email address to join them. If the username and email address that you need to use is different than the device's room mailbox, you need to add them to your device. You can do this in the device settings or in the XML config file.
Use device settings
To configure the Teams Rooms device using its touchscreen, do the following:
- On the Microsoft Teams Rooms device, select More ....
- Select Settings, and then enter the device administrator username and password.
- Go to the Meetings tab and select Cisco WebEx, Zoom, or both.
- If you want to join meetings with the username and email address associated with the room mailbox, select Join with room info.
- If you want to join meetings with an alternate username and email address, select Join with custom info and enter username and email address you'd like to use.
- Select Save and exit. Your device will restart.
Use the SkypeSettings.xml configuration file
The following settings can be added to the
SkypeSettings.xml file located in
C:UsersSkypeAppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.SkypeRoomSystem_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalState. For more information about the

To enable Cisco WebEx meetings, set the
WebExMeetingsEnabled XML element to True, as follows.

You can optionally specify a custom username and email address to join third-party meetings using the following XML elements. If the values you provide aren't valid, the Teams Rooms device will default to use room mailbox username and email address.
To join Cisco WebEx meeting from a Teams Rooms device, the Cisco meeting needs to be hosted using Cisco WebEx web application version WBS 40.7 or later.

What is Microsoft Teams?
Microsoft Teams is a communication platform included in Microsoft 365. Though Teams offers video conferencing capabilities, that’s far from its only use case — the platform also includes chat and voice calling functionality and enables teams to share and edit files in real time via a shared virtual workspace. Teams is highly integrated with other products in the Microsoft suite, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel, making it a true collaboration platform. What is Zoom?
Zoom is a unified communications platform that encompasses audio and video conferencing, chat functionality, video webinars and more. Zoom offers an entire marketplace of application integrations, including MailChimp, Zendesk, Marketo and even Microsoft Teams for additional extensibility. Though Zoom has been around since 2011, it’s seen stunning growth in 2020, increasing from 10 million daily meeting participants in December 2019 to over 300 million daily meeting participants in April 2020.

Microsoft Teams customers have their pick of four pricing plans. The most basic version of Teams, which is available for free, offers video conferencing for up to 300 participants and a maximum meeting duration of 60 minutes (both until June 30, 2021), as well as chat and collaboration capabilities for up to 500k users. Organizations interested in accessing additional productivity apps and secure cloud services should consider investing Microsoft 365 Business Basics for $5 per user, per month, Microsoft 365 Business Standard for $12.50 per user, per month, or Office 365 E3 for $20 per user, per month.
Zoom offers five pricing plans, starting with Zoom Basic for personal meetings, which enables you to host up to 100 participants with a 40-minute maximum group meeting duration. Small businesses should consider Zoom Pro; for $14.99 per month, per license, you can host up to 100 participants in unlimited group meetings. For $19.99 per month, per license, small- and medium-sized businesses can get Zoom Business and host up to 300 participants per meeting.
Organizations that require calling and chat in addition to audio and video conferencing should consider Zoom United Business, which at $30 per month per license allows for up to 300 meeting participants. Finally, there’s Zoom Enterprise, which, as its name implies, was built with enterprises in mind. For $19.99 per month, per license, businesses can host meetings for up to 500 participants (or 1,000 with the Enterprise+ plan).
When it comes to its user interface (UI), Microsoft Teams’ greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. One of the things that makes Teams so appealing is its ability to pull video conferencing, chat and a variety of other Microsoft 365 productivity and collaboration features and present them all within a single, unified dashboard.
That said, with so many features and functionalities all in one place, Teams can be somewhat difficult for first-time users to navigate and can even seem overwhelming. If Teams is at the top of your list for video conferencing and communication, it would be wise for management to familiarize themselves with its UI before training your employees, so that they can lead by example.
Zoom, by comparison, offers far fewer features and integrations, however, it earns points for simplicity and ease of use. As a result, Zoom takes very little training to set up and use, meaning your remote teams can start collaborating that much sooner.
Both Microsoft Teams and Zoom boast video resolutions of HD 1080p at 30 fps, placing them neck-in-neck in terms of video quality. In order to achieve this resolution, Microsoft recommends a minimum connection of 2Mbps, while Zoom recommends a 3Mbps connection. It’s also worth noting that, unlike Teams, Zoom doesn’t enable 1080p by default — instead, it uses 720p default, though users can manually change their video quality settings.
In terms of features, there’s significant overlap between Microsoft Teams and Zoom’s — both offer audio and video conferencing, chat functionality and application, desktop, file and screen sharing. As we’ve mentioned, Teams goes far beyond Zoom’s core capabilities due to its tight integration with the entire Microsoft 365 software stack, however, Zoom’s app marketplace enables business to add extensibility and customize their implementation as needed.

By comparison, organizations that use the free version of Zoom get free 24/7 online support; all paid versions of Zoom also come with phone support, and the Zoom Enterprise plan includes a dedicated Customer Success Manager.
Both Microsoft Teams and Zoom both provide extensive documentation — including training videos, online webinars, customer forums and more — free of charge via Microsoft Docs and the Zoom Help Center, respectively.
Given that Microsoft is renowned for its security, there’s really no contest here. Microsoft Teams leverages end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, Rights Management Services support, at rest and in-transit encryption and Secure Real-time Transport Protocol technology for audio and video data. Microsoft’s Reports hub (formerly known as the Microsoft Transparency Hub) and official Teams security and compliance overview also provide end users with detailed information about the company’s privacy policies and how it handles user data. Depending on which industry your organization operates in, this transparency could prove essential from a compliance standpoint. According to a recent press release from Microsoft, Teams is HIPAA, GDPR, FedRAMP, SOC and FERPA compliant.
By comparison, Zoom offers 256-bit TLS encryption, AES-256 encryption and optional end-to-end encryption. It also provides meeting hosts with a variety of security capabilities, including waiting rooms for attendees, audio signatures, screen share watermarks and passcode-protected meetings. Zoom only stores basic information pulled from user account profiles, such as email address, user password, first name, last name and company name. Though Zoom claims to take security seriously, the platform has experienced multiple security breaches in recent months and has been criticized for its vague or misleading privacy and encryption policies. Though Zoom is still fine to use in most instances, organizations that discuss sensitive subjects during video conferences or are subject to strict data regulations might want to think twice.
