How to translate words and phrases

  1. Open Translate.
  2. Choose two languages.
  3. Tap the Microphone button , then speak. If your iPhone isn't in Silent mode, the translation will automatically speak and appear under the original text. If the translation doesn't speak automatically or if you want to hear it again, tap the Play button .

You can also type the words and phrases you want to translate. Just tap the text box, then type a word or phrase and tap 'go'. You can also switch between the two languages by tapping the language tab above the keyboard.

To get a definition of a word, tap the word in the translated text box or tap the Dictionary button . You can also save a translation to the Favourites tab for quick access when you need it. Just tap Favourites under the translation to save it.

How to use Translate to have a conversation

When Automatic Detection is turned on, Translate will detect which of the two selected languages is being spoken and translate to the other language. The app translates the language it hears automatically so that you can carry on a conversation with someone.


To have a conversation with someone:

  1. Open Translate and choose your two preferred languages.
  2. Tap the Microphone button , then start speaking. When the app detects that you've finished speaking, it translates what you said into the other language.
  3. Tap the Microphone button and ask the other person to speak. The app will detect when they've finished speaking and translate into your language.

If you want to hear the translation again, tap the Play button .

You can make the translations larger, so it's easier for others to read. Just turn your iPhone sideways and tap the Maximiser button . The screen Maximiser won't work if you have Portrait Orientation Lock turned on.

How to download languages to use offline

To translate without an Internet connection, you can download languages to your iPhone. Here’s how:

  1. Open Translate, then tap a language box at the top.
  2. Scroll down until you see Available Offline Languages.
  3. Tap the download icon next to the language.
  4. Tap Done.

When you download a language to use offline, it may take up space on your iPhone. You can remove a downloaded language whenever you like. Repeat steps 1-2, then swipe left over the language and tap Delete.
